Junior Infants Sounds 5th-8th March

05-March-18

Hi everyone,

Due to the snow last week we are a little behind on our sounds. The sounds for this week are as follows:

Monday: Revise all sounds to date and focus on 'oo'. We revised this in school today as it was quite tricky for the children this week. Please remember that this sound makes 2 different sounds. The children have learned that there is a short and a long 'oo' sound. The short 'oo' makes an 'u' sound (e.g. look, book, blood) and the long 'oo' makes an 'oo' sound (e.g. food, cool, spoon),

Tuesday: Revise all sounds to date and learn new sound 'x'.

Wednesday: Revise all sounds to date and learn new sound 'ch'.

Thursday: Revise all sounds to date and learn new sound 'sh'.

Please continue with the recommended daily sound activities for the above sounds:

  • say each sound individually - make sure to look for the sound, not the letter name
  • trace letters with index finger and write with pencil, crayon and/or twistable
  • draw pictures of words with new sound in sound copies or write words with new sound.
  • blend sounds together to make words.
  • practice identifying sounds around you - in the home

So far the children have covered s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, ng, v and oo. Please ensure that these sounds are practiced every night using the sound copy.

The activities we recommend you do each night are:

  • Say each sound individually - make sure to look for the sound, not the letter name
  • Trace letters with index finger and write with pencil, crayon and/or twistable.
  • blend sounds together to make words.
  • practice identifying sounds around you - in the home. eg 1:what do you see in the room that has the m sound? mat.. eg 2:What sound is at the end of this word? (chair) = r

Please also focus on the correct letter formation with your child.

  • It is very important that a child holds their pencil in the correct way. The pencil should be held in the “tripod” grip between the thumb and the first two fingers. The grip is the same for both left and right handed children.
  • A child needs to form each letter the correct way. The letter c forms the basic shape of some other letters, such as d, g, q, o and a. For these letters the pencil stroke must be anti-clockwise, not clockwise)
  • d (the pencil starts in the middle, not the top)
  • m, r and n (there must be an initial downstroke, or the letter m looks like the McDonald´s arches)

Thanks,

Susan and Pete
