Dear Parents/Guardians,

Apologies for the delay in publishing the newsletter due to a recent absence, the next newsletter will be published 12.11.2018. Here is some of the latest news from CETNS.

Farewell assembly

We had a farewell assembly to wish some staff who have left all the best in their new positions. We would like to thank Jennifer McHugo who moved house and Aidan who moved back to his beloved Donegal for all their hard work during their time with us in CETNS. We also wish Jenny SNA well in her new position. The assembly went very well and we would like to thank David, Aoife and Sarah for preparing the children to tell us about their memories of Jen and singing a song composed by David. Well done to all.

6th Class Assembly

Last Friday both 6th classes held the first Learn Together assembly of this academic year. The theme was all about Friendship.

For the previous two weeks we had been working in groups where we produced raps, poems, recipes, and songs all based on the friendship theme. I performed a song that I wrote with my friend Ciara. The two songs sang ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay and ‘Say a little prayer’ by the wonderful Aretha Franklin. Thanks David for all your help. We finished our day with a walk along the canal.

Friendship Poem

I wanted to thank you,

But was unable to explain,

What it means to have a friend,

To share life’s joy and pain,

It’s good to know our friendship,

Is one of endless devotion,

Forged out of respect,

And every kind of emotion.

It’s patient and forgiving,

Never failing or forsaking,

When a hand is outstretched,

Or one’s heart is breaking,

It’s ever faithful,

Even when the world condemns,

And sparkles in the darkness

Like fireworks and gems

It does my heart good,

At the end of the day,

To know that you’ll never

Be more than an email away.

Class Curriculum meetings

Thanks to all teachers for preparing information for the class curriculum meetings which took place recently. We hope you found them useful and would like to take this opportunity to remind parents if you have a concern about your child please don’t hesitate to arrange to meet with the class teacher. Individual parent teacher meetings will take place in November.

BOM

We wish to congratulate Richard Dixon who was elected as the male parent nominee to the Board of Management for the remainder of this term and the agreed report from the recent Board meeting can be read at http://www.cetns.ie/Page/Board-of-Management-2015-2019/685/Index.html

Special Education Needs Team

As you may be aware there has been a huge shortage of teachers at primary level, which has been well documented in the media over recent months. The SEN Team are currently waiting to fill two full time support positions. Support teachers may from time to time also need to cover classes when teachers are absent which further impacts on support teachers’ caseloads and timetables. We are doing our best and are trying to amend timetables, where possible, and endeavour to try to cover the needs of our SEN pupils until we recruit a full SEN team. For those parents and pupils affected, we ask for your patience and understanding regarding this.

EPV Days/Class Splitting

In relation to the above point, on days when teachers are absent, and when no substitute teachers are available, classes may be covered by a support teacher or classes may need to be split. Class teachers ensure that their classes get enough work across the curriculum to be completed during split days. Although it’s far from ideal to have to split classes it can be helpful to encourage children to focus on some of the positives about being split, how it supports their independence and resilience.

Power Hour

Power Hour, our literacy initiative, is running in both 1st classes. We appreciate those parents who have volunteered to help with it. If any other Garda vetted parents are available to help out any day in the classes from 9.40am-10.40am please let the office know.

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)/ Dyspraxia Awareness 7–13th October

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia, is a common disorder affecting fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. There is a display in the foyer with some information on dyspraxia if you are interested in learning more about it.

Many thanks, Sharon on behalf of the SEN Team

6th class Sugarloaf hike

On the 27th September the two 6th classes went on a trip to the Great Sugarloaf Mountain. We left the school early at 9.30am and arrived around 10.15am. David led us at the front, with Ailish in the middle and Liz at the back and we walked in groups and were allowed to chat on the way up. We stopped half way and had our lunch. We walked a little further but it was too windy to go up to the top. We went on a different route instead and found ourselves up another mountain side. We then had the rest of our lunch and sketched the view from up there. Later we went back down to the bus and continued on our way home. Thanks Ailish, Liz and David for a great day out. We would like to do something like that again in the future.

Basketball

I am hoping to start Basketball with 5th & 6th Classes on Tuesday 16th October. If your child is interested please contact me after school.

Regards,Liz

Violin Project & Cake Sale 18th October

We are hugely excited that we are able to pilot a new musical venture this year. All of our second class children are going to get a weekly violin lesson with the wonderful teacher, Maria Mason. We have been very busy, with the help of some parents, buying small violins so that every child can have one to use in the school. We are going to have a cake sale on Thursday 18th October to fund the purchase of these instruments. 6th Class are going to help with the running of it. Some special cakes will be raffled also. We hope you give this project as much support as possible.

If any parent happens to have a quarter of half size violin at home (or know a friend with one) that you do not need….. you might like to donate it to the school. Thanks in advance for all your support.

Please discourage them from playing with footballs in this area. Always remember to drive carefully & slowly in our school car park to keep the children safe.
