4th Class had an amazing time taking part in a Fast Fashion Workshop with the Rediscovery Centre. We learned all about the important work they do to help protect our environment through recycling, reusing and upcycling materials.
During the workshop, we discovered what fast fashion is – the mass production of cheap clothing that is often worn only a few times before being thrown away. We learned that fast fashion has a huge impact on the environment because it uses large amounts of water and energy, creates pollution, and sends millions of clothes to landfill every year.
We were shocked by some of the facts we learned about how long different materials take to break down. For example, some synthetic fabrics can take hundreds of years to decompose in landfill. We also learned what we can do to help, such as buying fewer clothes, choosing better-quality items, donating unwanted clothes, repairing damaged items and upcycling old materials into something new.
One of the most exciting parts of the workshop was seeing and handling materials that had been transformed into useful products such as coasters, handbags, ties, banners, tablecloths and headbands. We then became upcycling experts ourselves! Working in pairs, we carefully cut the seams and sleeves off old T-shirts, sliced the bottoms into strips, tied them together and turned the shirts inside out to create our very own tote bags. Some of the boys in our class were very innovative and used scraps to make captain armbands for playing football!
We had so much fun learning about sustainable fashion and finding creative ways to reduce waste. We are excited to share what we learned and encourage sustainable fashion choices throughout our school and community.
