We carried out some science experiments in class today. We wanted to know if oil and food dye mixed together in a liquid. The dye didn’t mix when added to the the oil so couldn’t spread out in the glass of water. When we pushed the dye down into the glass with a lollipop stick, the drops sank in the oil. This is because food dye is denser than oil. The drops of oil also kept their shape as oil and dye don’t mix.
Next we added red, blue, green and yellow food colouring to a saucer of milk. The dyes didn’t mix with the milk. We then dunked a cotton bud in washing-up liquid and dipped it in the saucer. When this was added, it was attracted to the milk and the dye and allowed them to mix together more quickly. The colours were lovely!
