Dear Parents/Guardians,

We have had a fun filled few weeks since our last newsletter and enjoyed some very interesting assemblies. We have a cake sale for Red Day Thursday of this week and a school closure coming up for the children next week for midterm.

Learn Together assembly

Thank you to both 5th classes for their inspirational assembly on Human Rights and in particular the rights of the child. We all learnt so much from their assembly and it is so interesting to see some social injustices outlined by them at the time of drafting the convention still remain. The CETNS generation of pupils will hopefully be the ones to change these for the better. Thank you to all for their hard work & especially Isla & Aoife.

Both 4th classes will host our next Learn Together assembly on Friday 15th in the hall at 9:30am. We look forward to seeing parents of those classes if you can attend.

School Lunches

The school has a healthy eating policy and in particular for school lunches. It appears some of the lunchboxes contain items that fall outside of this policy. We’d like to remind parents to encourage children to bring in healthy foods only and in particular nut free foods throughout the school. There are children in some classes allergic to other food items and this has already been communicated to parents depending on the class. Some ideas for lunchbox items can be found at http://www.cetns.ie/Content/2017/5/2010HealthyEatingPolicy_for_CETNS.pdf

Credit Union Quiz Team

Congratulations to our junior & senior credit union quiz teams who each came 4th out of 45 teams last Monday night in the Credit Union Quiz. That was a great achievement and we are all so very proud of you all.

Science/STEM

February STEM Challenge - Engineers Week 2019

Ireland and everything Irish is our STEM theme for February as preparation for our annual Seachtain na Gaeilge celebration. All our February STEM projects will form an exhibition for parents during Engineers’ Week which will place from 2nd to 8th March. As always, we encourage everyone to enter either in groups or individually.

If any parent engineer is interested in giving an engineering talk to our classes, please contact Siobhán, secretary in the school office or email secretary@cetns.ie

Designer Minds Scientists came in to do a science workshop with 3rd and 4th classes last Tuesday. The workshops introduced the children to the scientific area of biology, specifically bacteria. The children participated, carried out their own experiments and brought their experiment home with them. The experiments tested whether antibacterial handwash kills bacteria. Children carried out the test using nutrient agar plates and follow the scientific method which never fails to engage and enthral children as they bring their agar plate home with them and observe bacteria growing over the course of a week. We will be very interested in their results!

Maker Space

We are hoping to create a maker space filled with construction materials for our eager engineers in CETNS! We would welcome any donations of Lego, Duplo, K’nex, wooden blocks or other construction toys.

Engineers Ireland Publication

Our Monthly STEM challenge was mentioned on page 6 of Engineers Ireland's Classroom Challenge Pack 2019.

Aldi IRFU Rugby Sticker Collection

We are collecting rugby stickers from Aldi to earn a rugby equipment kit. You get 1 sticker for each €30 you spend. We hope to be one of two schools who will win €50,000 of sports equipment for the school. So please get collecting!

Noah, Paula’s 3rd class

Manga High Workshop

4th class recently had a very informative ICT maths workshop hosted by Chris from Manga High. They learnt all about what you have to do to get each type of medal, bronze, silver & gold. He taught the teachers how to keep activities classroom assigned. If you want gold you had to get every single question right & be on the difficult level & get 10 ‘on fire’ questions right. You can only get a bronze on your first go! There are easy, medium, hard & extreme levels. You have to get 3 questions right to go up a level & if you 2 wrong you go down a level. We love it, go on give it a try!

Finn & Cathal, Andreas’ 4th class

Art Workshop

Sinead Curran is in today with 2nd classes from 11am-1pm. This work is following on from work the class did with Eileen over the past few months & part of the Teacher-Artists Partnership Programme.

CETNS Subcommittee Work

Staff subcommittees will be working on SIP literacy, SIP numeracy, STEM, RSE & Primary Language Curriculum. The subcommittees will be in touch with those who expressed an interest in helping shortly. Thank you for completing the Numeracy survey also.

Playworks Assembly

All classes had an assembly on Friday to refresh our Playworks routines. The children are excited to see the new equipment and the new layout for the yard during Playworks which will run during the lunchtime breaks in the school at both junior & senior levels. Alben will be painting the lines shortly. They are especially keen to enjoy the chasing games at the small break times. A huge thank you to all the staff for helping to prepare the assemblies on Friday & our coaches for their hard work during these lunchbreaks.

Green Team Ecobricks assembly

It was amazing to hear what Pat from Reuzi had to say to us on Friday. We all learnt so much from her assembly and it is fascinating to see all the things built from Ecobricks. Many children were reminded our yard benches & story time benches are all made from recycled plastic too. Elaine set a challenge for every child to see if they can make an Ecobrick over the course of the next few months…we can look into ideas for what to build from our Ecobicks!

Parent-Teacher Association

The next PTA meeting will take place in the school hall on Wednesday 13th at 7:30pm.

Upcoming Events:

  • PTA are organising a Parent’s Talk on Internet Safety for children in March / April. A trainer from the National Parents’ Council will give the talk, the date will be advised shortly.
  • Parents may have heard about notices at either end of the pedestrian tunnel/bridge over the M50 regarding Fingal Co. Co.’s intention to extinguish the right of way. The PTA understands that public access to the pedestrian tunnel will be retained in the future scheme. For more information please see the following web page with info about the planning application and the two consultations: https://www.riverwoodres.com/row-2019/
