Dear Parents/Guardians,

Since our last newsletter the school has been very busy with lots of things happening. Eileen has come in and has been working with second-class children and will continue to do so on their myths and legends project.

Health & Safety Requests

Some children have pets and while parents often bring dogs along to walk to school can we please ask for all dog owners to remember that not at all children like dogs and some are terrified. As such we have signs on our gates stating no dogs allowed on school premises or car park other than assistance dogs.

All adults entering the school must do so via reception prior to proceeding around the school.

Science Week & Intel Mini-Scientist Exhibition

A work shop took place in Paula's class about science and we learnt all about marine litter. Lorraine, the marine biologist works in an urban organisation and has spent 6 months working in the oceans beside Hawaii helping to clean up plastic. She told us facts about how big sharks are and about a whale that died and scientists found 11 plastic bags inside the dolphin’s stomach. By 2050 there’ll be more plastic in the ocean than fish! So I am going to be more careful about marine litter.

By Talha in Paula’s 3rd class.

Intel Mini-Scientist

The Intel mini scientist exhibition took place in the hall on the 15th and a great day was had by all. Fifth and Sixth class children presented their projects and the rest of the school learnt all about their various experiments and findings. Many parents joined us on the day along with the Intel judges. Congratulations to our winners but particularly a very special congratulations to all the children who presented on the day, a lot of work went into the preparation for the day and we hope you are as proud of yourselves as we are. You can view some photos of the day http://www.cetns.ie/News/Science-Fair-2018/814/Index.html Thank you to all who helped with this event, especially staff and children.

Parent-Teacher meetings

Parent-Teacher meetings take place this Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure all children are supervised outside the school building during these meeting times as meetings are for parents only. Please also remember to attend punctually for the meeting at your allocated time these evenings work on a rotation and delays on a day like this can cause inconvenience to others. If for some reason you cannot make your meeting time please let the school office know in advance by email secretary@cetns.ie or by telephone so we can inform the relevant teacher. Thank you.

Violin Project

Second-class children have been working very hard with Maria Mason in learning the skills required to play the violin. I know they are enjoying the project and we look forward to seeing their progress over the coming months.

Blue Star Project

Fifth class children were at the launch of the Blue Star Programme in Government Buildings with the Taoiseach Mr Leo Varadkar last Thursday. Thank you to Isla for making the arrangements and for taking children from Aoife’s class & her own to this event. I know the children enjoyed the experience immensely and those who didn’t attend due to number restrictions worked on a video about the project which can be viewed here

Green Team

The Green Team have prepared a stand for the school foyer explaining all about marine litter and plastic recycling. They are taking orders for green products too such as bamboo toothbrushes etc. Thank you to Elaine for co-ordinating the work of the Green Team with the children.

Green Team Stall

The Green Team also put together a stall at the Winter Fair. We informed passers-by about the importance of our environment. We also sold bamboo toothbrushes for €3 and a packet of 5 bamboo straws with a cleaner for €8. We talked about recycling and how our marine environment needs to be treated with care. Overall, the stall was very successful and we hope everyone learned a lot about how we can help and protect our environment and value its importance to us.

December Shows

The CETNS December shows will take place from 10th-14th and staff and children are preparing their various performances for you. The timetable for this week is available on our website http://www.cetns.ie/Calendar and all performances will take place in the school hall. Please come along and join us as it makes the event extra special for the children on the day.

Parent-Teacher Association

The CETNS Winter Fair took place yesterday in the school. The children had a great time and were particularly excited about seeing all their school friends on a Sunday, everything that was on offer and the debut performance of the CETNS orchestra for the 2018/2019 academic year. A special word of thanks to Ian Brangan for organising the event on behalf of the PTA. Some of the art that was on display can be seen here.http://www.cetns.ie/Page/Gallery/720/Index.html

The new PTA held their first committee meeting and we’d like to congratulate the new committee members and in particular Ciarán Browne (PTA Chairperson), Dr. Tonya Leonard (PTA Treasurer) & Leisha McDonald (PTA Secretary).
